The Members of the Portland Blues Scene That
Influenced Me The Most...
I consider each of these musicians my teacher, and the things they've
taught me to be priceless...
And I honor them, for the tremendous treasure their music has been to
the Portland Metro Area over the years...

Ben
Rice Keys to Highway Portland Waterfront Blues festival ... {Special
note: I met Ben when he was 14 years old at my jam at the Lucky
Labrador in Multnomah Village. Two times in my life, from the first
note I heard somebody, I've had a feeling... something in the back
of my soul... deep down in my heart... said this is a special
musician... this guy, you gotta do everything you can to help him
get to where he wants to go. That first guy was Tommy Castro, with
the first note I heard of his Exception To The Rule CD. My wife had
bought it on the basis of how the CD cover worked... she could tell
it was something I would like... she is very, very wrong about such
things. The second time was Ben's first note at my jam. I don't know
where it comes from, I can't explain it, but I believe, to the
bottom of my soul, that like Tommy Castro, Ben Rice will one day win
a BMA BB King Entertainer of the Year award. I've been saying this
since Ben started doing this version of this song. And I simply
can't stop saying it. :) }

Route
66 | Big Monti Amundson {Special note: for me, other than Jimi
Hendrix's version of Johnny B. Goode on Hendrix In The West, this is
the definition of Rock-n-Roll guitar for me... for me, other than
the song by Jimi I just mentioned, it simply does not get any better
than this. That makes this song Holy Ground to me, and Monti Amundson
a Prophet of That which I Hold Sacred. For it was Monti who, For Me,
First Brought Texas Style Blues Guitar, before I first heard SRV,
just As Good, if Not Better than ZZ Top, To Earth, as I stood outside
the window of the Ash Street Saloon, one rainy winter Portland
night. There is no Memory More Sacred To Me... NONE!!!}
